You Can't Fake Presence

The most common complaint between couples is that the attention is no longer the same as it used to be. One person becomes more focused on work than on their personal relationships. And you wonder why the other person feels this way because, from your perspective, you have been talking to them, laughing with them, and spending time together just as you always have. But beneath the surface, things have changed in ways you forget to notice.

Everything good that happens between two people happens when they let down their guard. When they are one hundred percent present in the moment, sharing themselves with their significant other. When you are not fully present, your reactions become passive. They emerge from muscle memory rather than conscious attention. And people can sense that. It is not that complicated.

That is why, when people are stressed, they cannot pretend at home no matter how hard they try. If you think you are good at hiding your stress at home, then perhaps you are not truly being seen there. People simply are not paying enough attention to notice, which is a problem in itself. But in most happy families, you will be noticed. A partner who genuinely loves you, sometimes more than you have loved yourself, will pick up on these subtle changes.

A cheating partner is rarely caught the moment the evidence appears. They are caught when their partner first notices their mental absence, which then prompts them to look for the evidence that is keeping them mentally occupied. No matter how highly you think of yourself, you cannot multitask everything. A person who lives in your mind occupies your waking moments. When you are angry with someone, or anxious about a particular outcome, it consumes far more mental bandwidth than you realise.

It is this absence that people notice. If you want to measure whether you are truly present with your family, try this simple exercise. Notice how often you initiate a conversation about a topic you know will lead to a long discussion. When you are mentally absent, you instinctively avoid doing that because you want to reserve your mental bandwidth for something else.

When you are sitting alone on the toilet or out on your balcony, does your mind drift from one random idea to another, or does it keep returning to one or two specific thoughts? Randomness means your mind is creating ideas to fill empty space. One or two recurring thoughts mean your mind was already occupied and was simply waiting for you to be alone.

A partner who loves you, notices you, and wants you to be happy with them will recognise these absences almost immediately. You can argue all you want to avoid that conversation, but the signs are often obvious. And if you feel proud that you can pretend indefinitely and no one will ever catch you, then, my friend, you are not being noticed. Nobody gives a shit, and I know that feeling all too well.
