When a Good Life Gets Boring

Feeling saturated with life is inevitable. You are bound to feel cramped and bored with everything you do repeatedly. Like monkeys, we are wired to seek novelty, and we constantly attempt to find it in the world around us. Almost anything you do repeatedly is eventually bound to make you less grateful for the reward.

A good relationship feels boring after a while. A session at the gym feels boring. Sitting down at a blank page to write every day feels boring. But this saturation does not mean that something is wrong. In fact, if these things feel boring, it can be a sign that they are functioning exactly as they should. They produce results whose effects are felt over the long term.

Anything you do with consistency will eventually feel boring. And so it is natural to look outward, to seek novelty. We assume nothing will break down, that nothing can go wrong if we mess around. It can be a rude awakening when we realise that, when these things do break down, the consequences can be catastrophic.

When your routine starts to feel boring, identify the parts that make it function. If you want to make it more interesting, which parts could you change without dismantling the entire machinery? If working out every day feels boring, find a partner, join a competition, or set a challenge with someone.

If a relationship feels boring after a while, spice things up in the bedroom and talk to your partner about what you are seeking. Go on an adventurous trip, such as a safari or a demanding trek. Relationships strengthen when you do difficult things together. Set an ambitious goal in life together. Not just a financial one, because even that will become boring after a while. Work towards smaller goals together and celebrate every accomplishment.

Boredom is not necessarily a sign that your life is off track. It can also be a sign that everything in your life is functioning perfectly. A little too perfectly.

You need to introduce some struggle into it, but it should be the kind of struggle that strengthens your outlook towards life rather than leaving you demotivated.
