What Kind of Music Are You?

People are like music. There is all sorts of music available. Some are commercial. You love them in the beginning. You want to dance to them in pubs. Then they become repetitive, stale, and they quietly disappear from your playlist and, soon after, from your memory.

There is no dearth of such music. Most of it falls into this category. The reason is simple. An instant hit brings quicker money. Immediate money. It earns record deals with producers, maybe even a full album if you are good at crafting such hits.

A lot of people we encounter fall into this category as well. They give you a sense of delight when you interact with them. They crack the perfect jokes. They appear almost flawless. They know exactly how to keep you engaged.

But as you interact with them more, you begin to realise there is not much beyond what you discovered on the surface. We often assume that if the surface is this appealing, what lies beneath must be equally beautiful. That is generally not the case. And that is where disappointment sets in.

There is another kind of music, though. When you first listen to it, it does not sound impressive. But if you keep listening, it begins to grow on you. So much so that you eventually realise this is the kind of music you would want to hear before you die. Pink Floyd is a good example of this. Few people appreciate Pink Floyd on the first listen. Stay with them long enough, and you fall in love with their sound.

Only a handful of people fall into this category. They are least concerned with first impressions. They are not good at small talk. They are certainly not good at making a mark in the first meeting. But as you spend time with them, you begin to sense the depth in that quiet stillness.

You start exploring that depth and, figuratively, fall in love with it. This is not for everyone. Most people do not bother with them, and that is by design. They never felt the need to work on leaving an impression. They are comfortable in who they are.

The next time you meet someone, ask yourself a simple question. What kind of music would they be? That is why some say the kind of music you like also defines the kind of person you are. Music often reveals whether you are a classic or a passing fad.
