Six Steps To Start Writing

I am not a gifted writer. I am not a skilled one either. I love to read a lot. If you want to begin writing, that’s enough. Keep reading to learn how to write whatever you want to.

Writing is transforming your thoughts into words. There’s a problem, though: thoughts come at lightning speed. Sometimes, it is even faster than the speed of light, figuratively speaking. There is a thought in your head right now, at this very moment.

By the time you pick up a pen to write that thought down, you are onto the next one. This makes you feel like you don’t know what to write. You blame your lack of vocabulary. You think you don’t have the right words to express yourself. That’s why you believe writing isn’t your cup of tea.

Wrong.

As I said, writing is transforming your thoughts into words. That makes words just another medium. You can pick any word and any language to express those thoughts. Ultimately, you intend to share your thoughts with the world, not just the words. Can you express your thoughts in your language during a conversation? If the answer is yes, then you do know how to express yourself.

Try this six-step exercise at home, at your desk, or on your smartphone:

  1. Pick a thought that’s going on in your head and form an opinion around it.
  2. Write only bullet points. Do not construct any sentences.
  3. Once you are done with the bullet points, take a breather and see if you can add more.
  4. If you feel you are done, look at those bullet points and explain them in whatever manner you can, in any language you can.
  5. Explain all the pointers, and you will have your content ready.
  6. Share it with the world.

This is writing in its most basic form. Compelling writing takes practice and consumption. You need to read a lot of good books, which then turn into a launchpad for your brain to formulate ideas.

Not everyone wants to be a storyteller. Some only seek to write for clarity, and the above steps are one way to achieve that.

Happy writing!
