Living with Melancholy

There are days when getting out of bed feels harder. Every step feels like too much. There is an ache in the body that cannot be explained away as mere exhaustion because it is too much, everywhere and nowhere, all at the same time. There is an ache, but there is no single source. There is a profound dullness within you that you do not know how to shake.

Melancholy is a prolonged sadness. A kind of grief that settles within you. Unlike most kinds of sadness, this one does not disappear after you cry your heart out. It stays, and over time it begins to manifest physically. The constant exhaustion, the ache in the body, the heaviness, the weariness that colors everything you do.

Soon, the crying episodes become fewer, and a quiet solitude begins to seep into your life. You become more aware of this melancholy that now feels permanent. It settles inside you and slowly becomes part of your identity. Like a wave of nausea, the wave of melancholy arrives when you are least prepared, and when it does, you know you have no choice but to live with it.

I go quiet when it happens. For days. I have become very good at pretending, and I have people around me who quietly cooperate by not asking too many questions. How am I doing? Am I feeling alright? Does it feel hard? I do not have to answer any of them. So I continue to provide whatever is required of me. I play my role perfectly, and then I retreat into my solitude to live with the melancholy.

I wish I could tell you there is a way out, but there isn't. A prolonged sadness means there are too many unresolved things piled up inside your mind to be untangled in a single conversation. Therapy might be a good idea, but even talking can feel like a burden sometimes. The only options that seem to remain are to give up on this version of your life or escape to a new place with a new identity, hoping the melancholy will finally leave you.

Unfortunately, it won't. The more you think about it, the less logical escapism seems. You cannot run away from your heart. You cannot run away from your past. The only thing you can do is stay quiet for a few days, let the wave of melancholy wash over you, and then return to your ordinary reality. If you are as lucky as I am, no one will even notice the change.
