Keep A Joke Handy

A joke can make the world feel lighter. But most people worry too much to lighten the moment. They are too caught up in everything. Their own thoughts. What others think of them. What impression they would leave if they said something. Nothing is plain and simple. The mind is always on the defensive.

Cracking a simple joke requires your mind to be free. From all inhibitions. From all worries. From all the what-ifs. The only requirement is decency. Read the room. Read the person. Read the moment. And then go ahead with whatever comes to mind.

A good sense of humour is also a sign of intelligence. It is revealing, in its own way. A person who can crack a good joke is usually calmer. Being calm and at ease is a prerequisite for any humour to originate. They are also perceptive, because that is what it takes to extract humour from the mundane.

A person who can make others laugh is universally liked. A person who can crack a joke at his own expense is even more astute. He earns affection without any risk. Works like an anodyne. Just don't get carried away into too much self-flagellation. Lest you lose respect. Strike a balance and you will always have a seat at the table.

Lightening the moment is also the surest way of gaining trust. People trust those more who are less uptight. Who are easygoing. Who can say serious things wrapped in a joke. Humour is a clear test of intelligence. A good punchline requires you to see things from an entirely different angle. Obvious once said, but something most people would have missed. Relatable but never predictable. That is what makes you laugh.

A good sense of humour requires you to observe people more. Notice the anomalies in them. The absurdities. The silliness. Spot it in yourself as well. Be relaxed about the world. Be willing to take a punt. If you are unsure a joke will land, try something inoffensive first. Don't observe with the sole purpose of finding something funny. That makes you desperate. Just observe, and something funny will come. Being funny requires you to be at ease, so focus on that above all.

It is not necessary to be cracking jokes every time. It is a weapon. Use it wisely and it will win you battles. Wield it recklessly and you will only antagonise people. It is perfectly fine to be serious if that is your nature. But having a joke handy is always a good sign.

This also means you should be ready to take a joke at your own expense. A good comeback requires more composure than effort. You cannot be defensive. People love those more who can take a joke. Learn the art of banter. It teaches you how to be edgy without being vulgar. There is a thin line, and you only learn where it lies once you are good at it.

A good sense of humour will instantly make you likable. But you cannot be desperate to be liked. So relax a little. There are no right jokes. There is no right way to behave. Nobody thinks about you as much as you think about yourself. Drop that anxiety. Drop the what-ifs and go make someone's day.
