Helicopter View
We have been too bogged down by the current events of the day. Everything becomes a tragedy to a mind that is exhausted. A tired mind needs motivation, a guiding light towards its destination. Without that guiding light or motivation, we get lost. Everything we strive for gets lost when our sense of direction is lost.
There is no easy way to say this, so I will say it as it is: if you need a constant dose of motivation, you arenāt going to make it. Nobody is going to come and tell you to take one more step forward towards your goal. No incentive can last as a motivation. So, what can move us forward? How do we ensure we keep putting the next foot forward?
We need to track our pathway. Where did we come from, how has the journey gone so far, and are we still on the right path? The only way to answer these questions is by taking a larger view of the landscapeāa helicopter view.
Napoleon used to arrive early at the battlefield. He would climb to the highest point of the battlefield to analyze the movement of his āGrand Army.ā He would visualize the right moment and the right tactics to attack. From that vantage point, he would also visualize the movement of the enemies, their possible mistakes, and how he could make them commit more mistakes. He could do all this because he would wake up early in the morning and climb to the highest point to get the helicopter view.
You are the Napoleon of your story. Climb to the highest point in your mind and visualize the last few years. How did it go? Are you on the right path? If the answer is no, how do you get to the right path? Just like you would see a satellite view on Google Maps. If you are on the wrong highway, you can figure out your way back through Maps.
One of the easiest ways to achieve this is to track your last five years. What were you doing five years ago? What decisions did you make, and are you still following those? What went wrong and why? I am asking too many questions here because there is a constant need to ask ourselves questions.
If the vision is too blurry for you right now, if you are struggling for direction, donāt worry about it. You need to take a helicopter view of your life and course correct to the right highway.
