God’s Favourite
I don’t know if there is a God in this world. I am trying to figure that out myself. I do think that the ultimate path to God is the discovery of truth. God is truth, and in truth lies God. I am not a profound religious thinker. I don’t know the shape or size of God.
That is also why I don’t think I am lucky. I don’t believe in something called luck. There is serendipity. There are lucky coincidences, whatever that means. But I do believe I am blessed.
Being lucky means experiencing an event that saves you from disaster or propels you forward. Winning a lottery is the easiest example of luck. Narrowly escaping an accident is another. It implies a single event that you needed to go your way.
Being blessed is different. You will not necessarily have a comfortable life. There will be no such coincidences. Nothing will happen that brings about a dramatic change in your life. In fact, there will be plenty of events that make no sense to you at the time. But when you look back, you realise they shaped you. They were the pivotal moments in your life.
That is what being blessed looks like. When I say nothing bad will happen to me, I do not mean that I will be spared every unfortunate incident. I mean that, in the long run, things will work out. I always feel that whatever path is presented to me, as long as I keep being who I am — eternally curious, focused on self-improvement, and uncompromising in my value system — I will come out of it satisfied. In the end, I always get what I need. Not necessarily what I want, but that’s okay.
It’s funny when I think about it. I cannot call this luck in the way lucky instances usually operate. These are not isolated instances; they are entire phases of my life. I have been through a lot of turbulence, and I am still going through it. I have been broken, dejected, and on the verge of harming myself. And yet, during those difficult times, I have found people or opportunities that made me feel better. Transformed me even.
I always struggle to explain this to people. I don’t know whether there is a God as a singular entity, but I do believe there is something out there that looks out for me. I cannot explain it, and I don’t know if it is God, destiny, or simply the way life unfolds.
But I have come to trust that whatever happens, there is something to be found in it. Perhaps I am not God’s favourite in any literal sense. Perhaps I have simply learnt to recognise the ways in which life has been kind to me, even when it didn’t feel that way at the time.
I believe I have a destiny, though I have no idea what it looks like. I feel I am supposed to understand people, see the world differently, and, most importantly, live this life on my own terms.
When you realise that you are blessed, you begin to wonder: what is the purpose of my life? That answer has not been revealed to me yet. So I do what I have always done: keep following my heart, keep chasing my curiosities, and keep wondering about the world around me. I am not worried about money; I know I will make enough. I have no particular fascination with worldly pleasures. I find enough enjoyment in the life I already have.
I don’t know if I will ever find the answer to whether God exists. For now, I will continue searching for truth. And perhaps that is enough. I may never know if I am God’s favourite, or if there is even a God to have favourites. But I know that life has given me more than I could have understood while living through it. And for now, I choose to trust that.
