Find Your Outlet
Many people live with a persistent sadness. It is like carrying a deep-rooted grief you can neither name nor cure. Slowly, the motivation to do anything drains away. You no longer see a reason to get out of bed. Your energy is gone. Joy is absent. Even your body feels heavy.
You don't want to go to therapy because there seems to be nothing to talk about. There is nothing you can put your finger on. This is often a sign of dormant energy looking for an outlet. You don't know what to do next. Everything feels mundane. More money, more work, or simply redirecting your attention won't fix this. What you need is a creative pursuit that absorbs you completely.
Psychology calls this sublimation: channelling pent-up inner energy into creative work or sport. Excess sexual energy can be redirected into art, writing or intellectual work. Excess frustration can be channelled into competitive sport. If the frustration runs deeper, try releasing it through creative forms like comedy or music.
It is one of the finest defence mechanisms we have. It quietly heals you while helping you produce some of your best work. It has limits, though. Someone who has endured extreme trauma, the kind that leaves them in deep shock, needs serious help. Sublimation can aid recovery, but professional help must come first.
Many people live with profound loneliness. Some are at the stage where bitterness hasn't yet seeped in. Others are past it, where even the bitterness has faded and they have gone numb, resigned to their fate. Once you learn to recognise it in people, it is heartbreaking. For them, creativity works best in a group. Using an art form to bond with others brings more joy and energy into the art itself.
It is impossible to live a full life without expressing yourself. As humans, we find our deepest joy in self-expression, whether with loved ones or through some other medium. The less we express, the deeper we sink into melancholy. It kills you quietly. Having people around helps. But sometimes, finding better ways to express yourself transforms you from within. It makes you stronger and, ultimately, a better person.
I prefer to express myself creatively because then I never have to field people's questions or face the feeling that not everybody cares. Find your outlet. We get one fucking long life. We have to take care of ourselves.
