Do More Hard Things
Our body is wired to feel good after a hard working session. You feel good when you have an intense workout, when you come out after intense but successful brainstorming. The dopamine release is intense. But it has a lot to do with directional intensity. Random labor at odd hours is frustrating, like when your mom forces you to clean your room, or when your wife forces you to do some shopping for your home. The intensity doesn’t feel the same.
It is clear that our brain and body enjoy hard work with directional intensity, yet we constantly run away from it by making excuses. Our body isn’t lazy; our mind is. The more you find happiness in doomscrolling, the more you will prefer doomscrolling. Your mind prefers high reward with minimum effort, so it fools your body into believing it has achieved something, like creating a perfect workout plan or watching those workout videos that promise to make you look good in 3 months. We would rather do that than do a bad workout.
Ask yourself: what is the most intense activity that will guarantee you joy but is hard for your mind and body? Do that. It’s better to screw up than not do it at all. Your body craves intense things in life. Lift weights. Go for a run. Spend hours working on your project. Go down rabbit holes. Challenge your mind and body to work at high intensity.
