Between Fire and Ice, Choose Fire

Everybody wants stability in a relationship, which is a practical choice. Everybody wants peace in the end. They want a household free of fights and quarrels, an intuitive understanding, and essentially a life without any challenges. But such a partner and such a life also come with their own tradeoffs.

Imagine living a life where your heart never skips a beat. The passion never materialises because there's no catalyst for it to surface. Both people are so consumed by their own routines that there's no room to explore anything beyond them. That doesn't mean it's the worst choice, or that you shouldn't aspire to it. But a life without passion is too dull, and in my opinion, not worth living.

Most relationships go stale because there's no fire left in either partner. Or if there was a fire, it has long since died out, and not even a spark remains. That fire and spark get buried under emotional baggage too heavy to shed. So the easier way out is to look for that fire elsewhere, in other activities or other people.

Such relationships die a natural death without ever being formally ended. They become hypocritical: on the surface you say the right things, you do the right things, you never cross a boundary, but deep down you yearn to cross every boundary, to abandon your morals altogether. You look for that fire elsewhere, and when you find it, you want to be consumed by it, just to feel alive again.

Who is to blame for such a death? The simple answer is both, but not in the same way. A woman's role is to ensure her man's desire never fades, that his physical hunger is always met. A man's role is to make his woman feel desired and wanted, to remind her that she isn't just his partner, but also a woman aching to break free. Let her explore her emotional range. Let her be angry, let her cry, let her throw tantrums, let her voice what she secretly craves. Do this, and she will be yours forever.

People forget that a stable relationship doesn't mean you stop doing the things you once did. It's a condition that allows you to do whatever you want with that one partner. The search for a partner ends, and what should begin is the exploration of all your fantasies and needs. But in reality, the opposite happens. Once the search for a partner ends, so does the exploration of each other. Both grow overconfident, assuming they already know one another completely.

You can never truly know each other, no matter how hard you try, because people evolve. They move through life relying on a preexisting mental model that constantly gets rewritten by new experience. The person you knew in college is no longer the same person who returns home from work each evening. Life has humbled him considerably. His wants and desires have shifted entirely. The same holds true for the woman. Changes in her hormones, her body, and her fading beauty only deepen her insecurity.

If given the choice, I would seek stability, but laced with a touch of passion, a touch of madness, without letting it tip into vulgarity. Between fire and ice, I choose fire, because in the end, you crave warmth.
